A program to stay safe

Canopy

The branches overhead that keep the weather off: practical safety skills, taught hands-on, so an emergency is met with practice instead of panic.

Canopy is the safety and emergency preparedness education program of The Belonging Tree Foundation. We teach individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities — including foster youth — the practical skills needed to stay safe in fires, medical emergencies, and other urgent situations.

For the learners

Hands-on, shaped to how each person learns

Through partnerships with fire departments, EMS providers, schools, and disability service agencies, Canopy delivers hands-on instruction adapted to each learner’s communication and sensory needs. Real practice, not a pamphlet, so the skills are there when the moment comes.

For the responders

Training the adults who answer the call

Safety education runs in both directions. Canopy also trains first responders and educators to teach safety skills effectively, so the person arriving with the siren already knows how to reach the person they came to help.

Project B.R.A.V.E. Academy

Canopy’s curricula are delivered through Project B.R.A.V.E. Academy:
